Les misérables

Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Misérables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert. Hugo describes early nineteenth-century France with a sweeping power that gives his novel epic stature. Among the most famous chapters are the account of the battle of Waterloo and Valjean's flight through the Paris sewers.

  • "This is an Abridged EditionVictor Hugo began writing Les Miserables twenty years before its eventual publication in 1862. Les Miserables is primarily a great humanitarian work that encourages compassion and hope in the face of adversity and injustice. It is also a historical novel of great scope, and provides a detailed vision of nineteenth-century French politics and society. Hugo hoped Les Miserables would encourage a more progressive and democratic future. Hugo wrote Les Miserables with a literary and political revolution in mind.Les Miserables emphasizes the three major predicaments of the nineteenth century. Each of the three major characters in the novel symbolizes one of these predicaments: Jean Valjean represents the degradation of man in the proletariat, Fantine represents the subjection of women through hunger, and Cosette represents the atrophy of the child by darkness."@en

  • "When poverty drives Jean Valjean to steal a loaf of bread from a baker's window, it is an action that will haunt him for the rest of his life. A citizen of post-revolutionary France, he is sentenced to 19 years' hard labour. On his release, his fortunes change and he becomes a respectable businessman and member of society, and yet his past continues to dog him in the form of the sadistic Inspector Javert, who seems determined to pursue Valjean to the grave. A student uprising is gaining momentum in Paris, and barricades are being built around the city. Valjean's adopted daughter, Cosette, has fallen in love with the young revolutionary Marius, and the lives of all three are in peril unless they can flee to safety. Some of the most significant moments in 19th Century history form the backdrop for Victor Hugo's powerful story, in which love and heroism march in the face of poverty and social injustice."

  • "Moral dilemmas abound in this melodramatic novel set in France between 1815 and 1832. A heartless justice system burdens the poor, even those wretches who steal only one loaf of bread to ward off starvation. Such is the pitiful plight of Jean Valjean the strong hero and moral giant of this story. Even worse, a dying mother, racked by tuberculosis, sells her body to buy medicine for her sick child. Miserable, desperate poor folks suffer the full prosecution of the law and the eternal pursuit of the police. Is justice without compassion, still justice? To the barricades you miserables, you have nothing to lose but your tears!"
