Murders in the Rue Morgue

"George C. Scott portrays a brilliant Paris sleuth in this stylish adaptation of the 1841 Edgar Allan Poe short story that fathered modern detective fiction (and four previous film versions). Here, the setting has been updated to 1899 Paris, where two women have been savagely slain in their Rue Morgue home, sparking terror among the citizenry and raising clamor in the newspapers. The hue and cry eventually reaches Auguste Dupin, a former police investigator, who decides that the gendarmes are not on the right track. Launching an independent inquiry, Dupin faces a baffling array of questions. There is no apparent motive. Witnesses heard the murders take place, but could not understand what the killer was saying. And above, all, the murder room was locked from within, and its windows were nailed shut"--TV guide.
