  • "This volume presents papers from the Tenth International Congress on MedicalInformatics, MIE 91. The contributions describe original research in all areas of Medical Informa- tics. The scientific topics presented range from information and communication systems, knowledge-based systems, signal and image processing, health care, biometry and biomathema- tics, research and epidemiology, classification and coding, and nursing, up to computer-assisted education, medical cur- ricula, and even robotics in medicine. They are interdisci- plinary in nature and may therefore be of interest to a va- riety of professionals: medical informaticians and health information scientists, medical computing specialists, pu- blic health and hospital administrators, physicians, nurses, other allied health personnel, and consultants in the vario- us health fields. A highly prevalent topic in the volume at hand is medical information and communication systems, hos- pital, medical, clinical, ward, nursing, health, and execu- tive information systems. hospital and data communication networks and PACS, drug information systems (database, in- teraction, monitoring) and related issues such as standardi- zation of information exchange. The volume's subject index, for example, contains atotal of 40 cross-references to the above-mentioned keywords. Moreover, a "hot" topic is knowledge-based systems with 62 cross-references in the sub- ject index. This topic was not only discussed in several Me- dical Expert Systems' sessions but is also part of sessions such as biosignal and image processing, computer-assisted instruction, and information systems anddecision support. Some areas of knowledge-based systems are discussed in de- tail. This concerns for example, knowledge representation, knowledgeacquisition and learning, knowledge models, and evaluation issues. Several contributions report on clinical applications of knowledge-based systems andthus demonstrate their achieved practical usefulness."
