  • "Summary: First published in 1920, F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Bernice bobs her hair" accurately reflects the conventions and manners of the time. While visiting her aunt, Bernice realises that her lack of social graces and know-how is annoying her popular and fun-loving cousin, Marjorie. Advised and coached by her, Bernice decides to change her image and is so successful that her cousin's jealousy is aroused. Following up a line Bernice had used to attract attention, Marjorie challenges her to have her hair bobbed. Unwilling to back down, Bernice takes the plunge and almost immediately regrets it. Fun and romance turn into a feeling of rejection, but in the end Bernice strikes back in an appropriate act of revenge. The film stars Shelley Duvall as Bernice, Veronica Cartwright as Marjorie and Bud Cort as one of their admirers. Awards: American Film Festival, New York."

  • "This story, written by F.Scott Fitzgerald, is about Bernice. Although of the pre-flapper generation, her struggles in learning to "fit in" are as modern as today. She is taken in tow by her know-it-all cousin, Marjorie, who sets out to remake her. Under Marjories's tutelage, Bernice becomes so adept in applying the lessons in how to attract and beguile men that she begins to rival Marjorie at her own game. When Marjorie attempts to humiliate Bernice, and actually succeeds in goading her into bobbing her hair, Bernice strikes back in an act of revenge that gives the story a delightful ironic twist."
