"Gilda è una procace ballerina che, abbandonata dall'amante giura di vendicarsi e a tale effetto si fa sposare dal ricco proprietario di una elegante bisca di Buenos Aires. "L'action se situe en Argentine, Johnny Farrel, un joueur assez minable, devient le bras droit de Ballin Mundson, propriétaire d'un luxueux casino. Ce dernier présente sa femme, Gilda a son bras droit. Ceux-ci, anciens amants feignent de ne pas se connaître. Le propriétaire du casino dissimule certaines des ses activités. En fait, il est à la tête d'un cartel international, produisant du tungstène et sponsorisé par les nazis. La seconde guerre mondiale s'achevant, le propriétaire du casino tente de se débarasser des ses encombrants associés. Il assassine l'un d'eux et, pour fuir la police, simule sa propre mort dans un accident d'avion, laissant sa veuve à la tête d'un empire. Le bras droit épouse Gildamais la délaisse, lui reprochant la mort de son mari. La haine s'installe dans le couple puis finissent par s'avouer leur amour. C'est à ce moment que le mari réapparaît, décidé à tuer le couple. Cependant, il est abattu par un serviteur sous les yeux d'un détective qui, proclamant qu'on ne meurt qu'une seule fois, ne fera aucun rapport. Les deux tourtereaux trouveront enfin le bonheur."
