"Commercially calculated equivocation or the will to an implacable objectivity? 'Exodus', as much as any of Preminger's films, has been a focal point for both his detractors and defenders, if only because it was his most successful production at the box office. Preminger found the dimensions of the Scope screen congenial to his commitment to lucidly dramatise 'evidence' in an open image rather than orchestrate one point-of-view over another on the editing bench. In portraying the birth of Israel as a nation state through the blending of personal and collective drama the script, while basically pro-Israeli, is not the Zionist propaganda claimed by some. In translating script to screen Preminger's objective visual style encourages the viewer not to take sides but to weigh up the evidence and reach his/her own conclusions about the competing moral positions of the characters. This laserdisc version is letter-boxed to retain the original 2.35:1 Panavision ratio."@en

Als die amerikanische Krankenschwester Kitty Fremont nach Zypern kommt, ist die Insel zu einem großen Internierungslager geworden. Ungefähr 30000 jüdische Emigranten sitzen dort hinter Stacheldraht, weil die britische Regierung ihre Einreise nach Palästina verhindern will. Kitty entschließt sich, in einem der Lager zu helfen. So lernt sie viele Menschen kennen, deren Schicksal sie in den nächsten Monaten teilen wird. Ari Ben Kanaan, einem Mitglied der jüdischen Selbstschutz-Organisation Haganah, gelingt es, als britischer Offizier verkleidet einige hundert Insassen aus dem Lager herauszuholen und auf ein Schiff zu bringen, das er "Exodus" nennt. Im Stil eines aktionsreichen Spannungsstückes verfilmt, wobei die geistigen und politisch-historischen Hintergründe sehr vereinfacht werden.
