  • "Metropolis, the acclaimed science fiction masterpiece directed by the legendary Fritz Lang, takes place far into the future where "workers" battle the "thinkers" for control of society. This dark and grom portrait of the future reflects the class struggle in 1920s Germany. Metropolis is a landmark film and is acclaimed for its daring look into the future and innovative use of special effects."
  • ""Takes place in 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark underground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor.
  • "An expressionistic vision of a struggle between management and labor in a city of the future using science fiction and spectacular special effects to tell a story of biting social satire. In a futuristic time and place, an above ground city of lightness, culture and respectability is kept going only by the enslaved proletariat laboring beneath in the underground city: a nightmarish, cruel, and dark place. A banker's son rejects the upper world and joins the workers of the underworld. He meets Maria who urges a peaceful change and passive progress for the workers. The hero's father hires an evil scientist to make a violent robot who looks like Maria, who will incite the workers to riot, thereby giving the banker an excuse to enslave the workers. The workers riot and almost destroy society, until the real Maria appears to tranquilize them. The banker learns his lesson, and designates his son as mediator between society and workers."

Since then, more than a quarter of the film was assumed to have been lost. In 2008, an almost complete version of the film was discovered in Buenos Aires. The material was heavily damaged and, because it had been printed on 16mm film stock, does not have the full-aperture silent picture ratio. Utilizing the footage from Argentina, a virtually complete Metropolis has been reconstructed and its proper editing has been restored. The text of the intertitles was taken from German censorship records and has been translated into English. In order to maintain the scale of the restored footage, the missing portion of the frame appears black. Black frames indicate points at which footage is still lost. Intertitles in a different typeface have been added to summarize the contents of the missing scenes."@en

  • "In 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who live in dark squalid subterranean homes and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor, these two societies are on the brink of conflict, but an optimistic idealist encourages the workers to be patient, better days are coming. Lang's dark vision takes an idealized turn after 93 minutes of screen time, concluding with a final scene where industrialists and labor shake hands for a better future. Metropolis was made by Lang at Berlin's UFA studio with an unprecedented budget; the director spent one year and 7 million marks to realize his cinematic masterpiece. 25,000 men, 11,000 women, 1,100 bald people and 250 children were employed as extras on the mammoth sets that the film required. Metropolis was partially based on two medieval myths, The Golem, and Hommunculus. Fritz Lang said in 1959, "I don't like Metropolis. The ending is false. I didn't like it even when I made the film." Nevertheless, the film is one of the great masterpieces of the silent film era."

  • "Perhaps the most famous German film of all time, and certainly one of the most influential of all silent films, this restoration of "Metropolis" is the most complete and authentic since its day or release in 1927. The setting is the future, where people are divided into two groups: poor workers living beneath the ground, and the rich who enjoy a decadent city of luxury. The tense balance of these two societies is realized through images that are among the most famous of the 20th century, influencing later science-fiction films such as "Blade Runner" and "Star Wars"."

But Metropolis also has a great secret, so hidden that not even Freder Fredersen, son of founder Joh Fredersen knows about it. He is spending his free time in the Eternal Gardens, when suddenly a woman shows up, with what looks like a class of children. They're from the City of Workers, in the depth, Freder learns. "These are your brothers," she tells the children, before she is forced to leave. Freder is so intrigued he follows them into the depth and doesn't like what he sees. The workers are exploited, they must do labor like robots. Freder tries to convince his father to change, while the woman tries to keep workers' morale high by predicting a man will stand up that will mediate. Someone that will use both hands and head, someone that will be the heart." -- www.imdb.com This newly restored version of the film is the closest yet to the version Fritz Lang debuted to theatrical audiences in 1927 Berlin.
