  • "Resetting the operetta in a mythical kingdom, Lubitsch also replaced the lightweight romance with a satire of government, society and sex. The lush Lehar music and romantic lyrics contrasts with the disenchanted dialogue. Singing dominates the first half, dancing dominates the second. Music brings Chevalier and MacDonald together setting them apart from the supporting characters who do not sing while at the same time supporting class differences -Chevalier's singing is of the music hall, MacDonald's is of the opera house. The grand design and minimal choreography reflects Busby Berkeley's influence but is not given over to Berkeley's celebration of sheer numbers. The dances are extensions of Metro's opulent design. Made just before the introduction of the strict new production code, in style and spirit The Merry Widow was the last of its kind."@en
  • "Although plagued by strife both on and off the set, The Merry Widow was one of the few Stroheim films to be released substantially as he intended. Ironically it was a great success with the critics and the public. Characteristically, Stroheim made the original material his own. The libretto of the operetta provided the bare bones of only the final third of the film. While the theme of true love thwarted by Ruritanian class barriers, and then redeemed, is still there, the characterisation is unmistakably Stroheim's. He split the character of Prince Davilo (Gilbert) whom he originally planned to play himself, into two. While both are assured in their aristocratic lineage and their womanising, Davilo is sympathetic, Mirko is his sinister shadow. The lecherous old Baron Sadoja is explicitly characterised as a foot fetishist. Sonia, the farmer's daughter in the original, becomes Sally O'Hara, vaudeville dancer, in deference to Mae Murray's limited talents."@en

The Baron dies of excitement on their wedding night, and Sally goes to Paris, where she becomes known as 'the Merry Widow.'
