Leaves out of the Book of Satan

Satan appears in four separate guises: as a pharisee who tempts Judas to betray Christ; as a Grand Inquisitor in 16th century Spain; as a people's commissar in the Paris of 1793 and as an unfrocked Red monk during the Russo-Finnish war of 1918. Although comparable to Intolerance thematically, the episodes in Dreyer's film are presented sequentially and chronologically. However, Dreyer builds up the tempo in his montage so that the fourth episode, comparable to a Western in realisation, is cut very rapidly, each shot averaging about three seconds.
