Beyond a reasonable doubt

Andrews plays a writer who plans, with the cooperation of a newspaper publisher, to discredit the concept of capital punishment by deliberately implicating himself as a murderer only to prove how circumstantial evidence can lead to wrongful conviction. Lang's unrelenting fascination with characters as a function of his subject has never been more in evidence. He is not concerned so much with who is guilty, who is innocent but with the question: what is guilt and what is innocence?

Somewhat surprisingly, Tom eagerly agrees to this subterfuge. Unfortunately, an unforeseen event renders their perfectly formed scheme useless."
