Lorna Hatherwood lives close to Dickon's Wood, reputedly haunted by the ghost of a heartbroken young girl. Married to a dull husband ten years her senior, her life lacks excitement. Then the army arrives in town and everything is turned upside down when she goes to read to convalescing soldiers at a nearby manor. There she meets handsome medical officer Ewan Macmillan and, as they grow increasingly close, Lorna realises their relationship could spell disaster.
