American lobster, Homarus americanus, population characteristics in the lower Bay of Fundy (Lobster Fishing Areas 36 and 38) based on fishery independent sampling

This paper reviews two diving-based decade-scale research studies that form a time series of observation of lobster recruitment and spawning area use respectively. The paper also describes two new studies, one diving-based and the other a collaborative trapping study with industry, which allow decade-scale contrasts with results from historical studies. The four research studies provide insights into recruitment trends in the Bay of Fundy lobster fishery and important information for determining sensitive areas from a lobster fishery perspective in relation to coastal zone planning issues. In particular, these studies were designed to provide information that could be used in advising on salmon aquaculture development proposals.
