Work and well-being : an agenda for the 1990s

This book is an adapted proceedings of a conference cosponsored by the American Psychological Association and the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH), held on November 15-17, 1990, in Washington, DC. It presents selected introductory remarks, a reprint of the NIOSH "Proposed National Strategies for the Prevention of Leading Work-Related Diseases and Injuries: Psychological Disorders," and papers delivered at three centerpiece panel sessions: (a) Health Promotion, Education, and Treatment; (b) Surveillance of Psychological Disorders; and (c) Work Design and Stress. The panel papers are followed by comments by panel participants. The final section contains an invited address delivered by preeminent scholar and researcher Lennart Levi, Chair of the Department of Stress Research of the Karolinska Intitutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and a reprint of a monologue from "The Department" by playwright Barbara Garson, which was delivered as part of the central luncheon address. The volume focuses on many issues involved in the prevention, measurement, and treatment of psychological disoorders that potentially arise within the work environment and situation and reviews some of the most current research.
