"Correspondence, deeds, personal financial records, photographs and memorabilia of several generations of this prominent Amherst, Mass. family during the second half of the 19th century. As a record of a wealthy 19th century family, this collection is important because of its size, time span and completeness. The correspondence provides a social, civic, economic, political and religious overview of the general state of society as well as daily observations about local matters and family life. The papers contain extensive correspondence between Henry F. Hills and his wife Adelaide Spencer Hills; between Henry F. and Austin Dickinson; between Adelaide and her grandmother, Mary Hollister Pitkin; and documents and papers related to the L.M. Hills Company (operated under various names between 1829-1935)."
