Malaya, 1941. Connie Hadley plays her role as a dutiful wife and mother without complaint, although she feels oppressed by her life and loveless marriage. When the Japanese invade, Connie and her family flee in their yacht to British controlled Singapore. When they learn that Singapore is already under siege, they make their perilous way from island to island, short of food and with tensions mounting. When a Japanese fighter plane crashes into the sea, they rescue the pilot and Connie discovers a new kind of freedom and a new, dangerous, exhilarating love.
