"The camera remains on Giuliana, the wife of the manager of the industrial complex at Ravenna. She is suffering a breakdown. For large sections of the film the camera and narrative see and feel from the point-of-view of Giuliana. The narrative is reticent and non-dramatic in its investigation of feelings. Rohdie suggests that the colour itself becomes a subject, displacing but not replacing the narrative. The image is flattened out so that characters are placed on the same plane. Antonioni sees 'no difference between the plastic and the psychological in the drama'. As in Antonioni's subsequent films the narrative itself becomes a field to be observed, investigated and interrogated."
