Cette histoire d'un pasteur qui prêche le pardon pour les pécheurs, mais qui ne peut pardonner à sa propre épouse lorsqu'il apprend son adultère, avait de fortes résonances pour le compositeur. À cette époque, il vivait au grand jour, sans être marié, avec la soprano Giuseppina Strepponi, mère de deux enfants naturels (qui n'étaient pas de Verdi).
