  • ""The family snapshot is the most humble of photographic genres. It is also the most ubiquitous. But although the snapshot has been an enormous formal influence on contemporary art photography, and although we are familiar with its aesthetic and it is related to other vernacular photographs--to the studio portrait, to the postcard--and to social documentary photographs, it nevertheless remains one of the most enigmatic, uncertain and fugitive of documents. Its immediate meanings are closed and private, known only to the individuals involved and their immediate circle. For this reason, while there have been many photobooks constructed from vernacular photographs, there have been relatively few featuring snapshots. One of the most successful is Floh, by the British artist Tacita Dean and her collaborator Martyn Ridgewell. The images in Floh are photographs discovered by Dean in flea markets across Europe and the United States--family portraits, holiday snapshots, scenic views, rites of passage and everyday, banal occurrences.
