  • "In 1930, sixteen-year-old Edward Beauclerk Maurice was faced with a stark choice: follow his mother and siblings to New Zealand, or pursue an uncertain future as an apprentice fur trader among the Eskimos. He decided to sign up for five years of Arctic life. With no telephone, no radio communication and only one annual visit from the supply ship, he found life in Baffin Land isolated and harsh. The Innuit taught him to build igloos, hunt polar bears and survive ferocious storms. After three years, he was sent to his own outpost, where, alone, he had to save the community from illness and starvation. This is the story of a young man determined to triumph over every circumstance."
