Alex, John Orr, and the Barbarian are three aspects of the single protagonist. Glasgow native Alex studied at the University of Edinburgh and fell in love while there. Returning from a reunion with an old friend Alex becomes distracted by the Forth Railway Bridge and crashes. While in a coma he relives his life up to that point. John Orr appears as an amnesiac living on the Bridge, a fictional version of the Forth Bridge. The Barbarian, another aspect of Alex's person, is a warrior who has various legendary adventures.
