"General description of the collection: The Antebellum images photograph collection consists of images of pre-Civil War Regular Army and state militia officers, enlisted men, and military school cadets (copied from original daguerreotypes and ambrotypes). Photographing of military subjects began shortly after the advent of photography in 1839. Most images are portraits of individual soldiers; however, there are several militia unit photographs. Some images are unidentified. The collection also includes several images (copied from photographs and paintings) of several aged Revolutionary War veterans, War of 1812 veterans, and U.S. Navy officers."
