"In the 1930s, Foshan thrives as the hub of Chinese kung fu, with various sects actively recruiting disciples. Though Ip Man (Donnie Yen) is an accomplished martial arts master, he keeps a low profile and only quietly sparring with his compatriots in friendly competitions at his home. But after an acknowledged victory to Jin Shan Zhao's (Fan Siu Wong) challenge, Ip Man becomes an instant hero and then develops a craze for Wing Chun in Foshan. Following the Japanese invasion, Ip Man's property is confiscated and his family is forced to live in a decrepit house. One day, General Miura (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi), a fanatical practitioner in martial arts, demands Ip Man to teach the Japanese Army Wing Chun, but Ip Man refuses it to his face and takes up Miura's challenge.
