Der Film ist eine Adaption der Erinnerungen des Literaturkritikers John Bayley und erzählt die Geschichte seiner Werbung um die britische Schriftstellerin Iris Murdoch und der anschließenden langen Ehe mit ihr. Das Szenario wechselt immer wieder zwischen der jungen Iris (Kate Winslet) -- jederzeit bereit alles und jeden mit ihren koketten Fähigkeiten im Umgang mit Worten und ihrem Sexappeal zu verführen -- und der älteren Iris (Judi Dench) -- die sich allmählich der grausamen Bemächtigung ihres Gedächtnisses durch Alzheimer ergibt -- und es ist unmöglich, von dem durch Verlust geprägten Ausgang des Filmes nicht bewegt zu sein. Judi Dench glänzt wie immer und gibt geistreiche literarische Bemerkungen, wissende Blicke und rasiermesserscharfe Metaphern mit gefälliger Leichtigkeit von sich. Die Freude, mit der Murdoch ihr sicherlich außergewöhnliches Leben genoss, ist in jeder Sekunde spürbar, in der Dench auf der Leinwand erscheint. Jim Broadbent in seiner Rolle des älteren Bayley ist ebenfalls ausgezeichnet in seiner Standhaftigkeit, seiner Hingabe und seinem Humor. Das Drehbuch allerdings ist schmerzlich vorhersehbar und in seinem häufigen Gebrauch von Symbolik schwerfällig (beispielsweise Blätter, die aufs Meer hinausfliegen, Steine, die auf den Grund eines Flusses sinken).
