"John Ford made 113 feature films in his remarkable career. His career is so extensive that is spans both the silent and sound eras of American film history. Ford's film The Searchers, is loosely based on the history of the Comanche and their losing battle with American expansion into Texas and the southern plains. Over a five year period, a Confederate veteran (John Wayne) tracks the Comanche warrior who killed his brother and sister-in-law and kidnapped their daughter. Ford's film explores the obsession of an aging Indian fighter, consumed with hatred for the Comanche. The Indian Wars had reached their climax with the death of General Custer at the hands of the Sioux and the Cheyenne at the battle of the Little Big Horn. Anti Indian sentiment was rampant and the norm. Director John Ford had bought the rights to the novel by Alan LeMay which he used as a basis for his script. The period of history featured in John Ford's film and LeMay's book, is unrivaled in human history. In the space of two short decades between 1854 and 1877, an entire culture, the people of the Cheyenne, the Sioux, Kiowa, Comanche etc. were removed from a region of 350 million square miles, their way of life destroyed in order to make way for westward expansion."@en

"Soon after the end of the American Civil War, Ethan Edwards, an unrepentant Confederate officer, finds a mission in the ten year search for his two nieces who were kidnapped by Indians. The search ranges across the American landscape, physical, emotional and mythical in this epic Western. Ford shows the frontier myth in a sober and disenchanted light. This mood is supported by John Wayne's brilliant portrail of a man who is a brutal and embittered survivor of frontier life and war."
