"Irlande, IXe siècle après Jésus-Christ. Suivant les ordres de son oncle Cellach, qui dirige de façon autoritaire l'abbaye de Kells, l'orphelin Brendan construit avec d'autres moines une muraille destinée à parer aux invasions vikings. Survient Frère Aidan, un maître enlumineur qui a fui son monastère détruit par les hommes du Nord, en emportant avec lui le mythique Livre d'Iona. Devenu ami avec le visiteur qui voit en lui son successeur, Brendan s'initie à l'art de l'enluminure et, bravant les interdits de l'abbé Cellach, part chercher dans la forêt voisine des baies servant à produire de l'encre. Attaqué par des loups féroces, le garçon est sauvé par Aisling, une fée de la forêt, qu'il en vient à apprivoiser. Puis, toujours contre la volonté de son oncle, Brendan entreprend de retrouver un diamant précieux, le "troisième oeil", essentiel à la finition de l'enluminure du Livre d'Iona. Mais le diamant se trouve dans la maison d'un monstre qui a causé la mort des membres de la famille d'Aisling."
