Interview with Dr Ron Mendelsohn, retired public servant and author

Mendelsohn talks about his family background; difficulties of life during the Depression especially in Haberfield and Leichhardt and the nature of the Jewish community in Sydney in 1930s. He then talks about his schooling at Kegworth, Leichhardt then Fort Street from 1926-1930; early work as a commercial salesman then employed by Bank of NSW where he was encouraged to attend university; influence of A.C. Davidson, General Manager of Bank of NSW. Mendelsohn discusses his work with the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Social Security; WWII and joining 1st Australian Armoured Division in 1942; transfer to Commonwealth Housing Commission followed by War Housing Directorate; sent by Public Service Board to London School of Economics in 1948 - thesis on social security; return to Australia to work in Dept of Social Security then National Security Resource Board under leadership of Ronald Walker. He then talks about the publications, "Fair go" and "The condition of the people" written while at ANU.
