  • "The Lantern Slides Series of the Photograph Collection contains lantern slides of the Baltimore Museum of Art and related subjects. The slides document the BMA's exhibits, facilities, works of art, events, and associated people beginning with the Inaugural Exhibition in 1923. Additional groups of slides included in the series document regional architecture and decorative arts. The slides of American furniture represent pieces in many collections and include some of those pictured in the exhibition catalog, Baltimore Furniture, 1760-1810. The slide for #7 in the catalogue is a detail view not included in the catalogue itself. All the others appear to be taken from the catalogue. Also included are slides of furniture labels, silver marks, and other related supplementary materials. Other slides are taken from items in the collections of Dr. J. Hall Pleasants and Dr. James Bordley. A handful of slides of Maryland furniture were made by Dr. Bordley to illustrate his lectures on the subject and were donated to the BMA after he used them for an important lecture on Maryland furniture at the Maryland Historical Society in 1946. Only a few of the 120 slides originally accompanying the lecture remain in the Photograph Collection. The location of the remaining slides is not known. The Maryland Silver slides, according to a note on the card marking the beginning of the Maryland silver section, "came as a gift from Dr. J. Hall Pleasants in 1943.⁰́₊ Numbers on the slides correspond to plate numbers in Pleasants' and and Howard Sill's 1930 book, Maryland Silversmiths, 1715-1830. The slides are slightly different from the images in the book.Other Maryland Architecture slides come from the photographs of various local photographers including Laurence Hall Fowler. Fowler's original negatives are held by the Special Collections Department at the Johns Hopkins University. The lantern slides are in most cases more tightly cropped than the originals."
