"Precious Jones, dont ce roman nous relate le témoignage argotique, incarne le destin d'une noire américaine emportée dans la spirale d'une misère pitoyable, dont les victimes semblent n'avoir d'autres ressources que la violence individuelle et d'autres aspirations que la richesse pourtant méprisée des blancs. Enceinte deux fois de son père qui la viole depuis sa petite enfance, battue par sa mère jalouse et tyrannique, sans autre horizon qu'un quartier délabré et des asiles qui ressemblent à des "cachots de briques humides", cette jeune fille semble éprouver autant de peine à dire son désespoir qu'à exprimer son humanité. "Des fois je voudrais pas être vivante, mais je sais pas comment qu'on meurt." Même si elle ne s'y sent pas toujours à sa place, elle se raccroche pourtant à l'école, la seule perche qui lui est tendue. Alphabétisation douloureuse, pleine de promesses, source d'illusions aussi qui s'évanouiront quand elle apprendra, à la lecture clandestine de son dossier scolaire, qu'elle est vouée à la profession d'aide ménagère alors qu'elle rêvait université. Et puis le père incestueux meurt du sida. Il a contaminé sa fille. A laquelle il est proposé d'entrer "dans la communauté des gens qui ont le virus HIV." Et qui refuse parce qu'elle "a besoin de réfléchir." Comme si la quête de dignité s'accomodait mal de cette sorte de "ghetto obligé". S'il évoque peu le sida, ce roman interpelle pourtant avec force sur le destin d'abandon sanitaire auquel sont vouées les populations marginalisées du pays le plus riche du monde. Quand elle atteint ce point de violence et de désespoir, la misère constitue une alliée de l'épidémie dont l'efficacité destructrice ne saurait se satisfaire de la seule réponse des discours bien intentionnés.
