An epic chess match on a transatlantic liner unearths a story of persecution and obsession. One of the most perfectly gripping novellas from a master of the form, Stefan Zweig. Chess world champion Mirko Czentovic is travelling on an ocean liner to Buenos Aires. Dull-witted in all but chess, he entertains himself on board by allowing others to challenge him in the game, before beating each of them and taking their money. But there is another passenger with a passion for chess: Dr B, previously driven to insanity during Nazi imprisonment by the chess games in his imagination. But.

"On a cruise ship bound for Buenos Aires, a wealthy passenger challenges the world chess champion to a match. He agrees, but only on one condition - that the stakes are suitably high. Soon, the chessboard is surrounded with onlookers - and one voice in the crowd will play a key role in the outcome of the match."@en
"Ungarische Übersetzung."
"The Royal Game (Or Chess Story; Schachnovelle in the original German) is a novella by Austrian author Stefan Zweig first published in 1942, after the author's death by suicide. Driven to mental anguish as the result of total isolation by the National Socialists, Dr. B, a monarchist hiding valuable assets of the nobility from the new regime, maintains his sanity only through the theft of a book of past masters' chess games which he plays endlessly, voraciously learning each one until they overwhelm his imagination to such an extent that he becomes consumed by chess."
November 1881 in Wien geboren.

"On a cruise ship bound for Buenos Aires, an electifying encounter takes place between the reigning world chess champion and an unknown passenger. The stranger's diffident manner masks his extraordinary ability to challenge the grandmaster in a game of chess; it also conceals his dark and damaged past, the horror of which emerges as the game unfolds."@en
