The war to end all wars the American military experience in World War I
Too often, military histories are limited to descriptions and analyses of battles, from the perspective of opposing commanders. In this study, Edward Coffman places WW I within the context of the entire American war effort. In addition to describing major battles and personalities--including junior officers such as Douglas MacArthur, George Marshall and George S. Patton, Jr. --Coffman presents the perspective of the common soldier. Topics often missing from histories of WW I are examined: operation of the draft, training of officers, performance of black troops, treatment of conscientious objectors and formation of the air force.
