"Having mostly experienced WWII as children and young adults, the filmmakers of DEFA's second generation made their first films in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The formative experiences of these directors included the end of the war, the founding of East Germany in 1949, the end of Stalinism, and the building of the Wall. Their films reflect on these historic and political changes. Members belonging to DEFA's second generation include Frank Beyer (Five cartridges, Naked among wolves), Heiner Carow (The legend of Paul and Paula), Gerhard Klein (Berlin - Schönhauser Corner), Joachim Kunert (The adventures of Werner Holt), Frank Vogel (Just don't think i'll cry) and Konrad Wolf (I was nineteen, Sun seekers), among others."
