Paradise lost[CN]

Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse by the 17th-century English poet John Milton. It was originally published in 1667 in ten books; a second edition followed in 1674, redivided into twelve books (in the manner of the division of Virgil's Aeneid) with minor revisions throughout and a note on the versification. The poem concerns the Judeo-Christian story of the Fall of Man; the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men" and elucidate the conflict be.

  • "In Paradise Lost Milton tells the story of the fall of man, which encompasses a battle that rages across Heaven between God and Satan. Here are passion and innocence, victory and defeat, hope and despair. This is without a doubt the greatest epic poem ever written in the English language."
  • "The basis of the text of Paradise Lost in this volume is the second edition of the poem, which was issued with Milton's own corrections in 1674, seven years after the appearance of the first edition. There were not changes of serious importance, but Milton took advantage of the opportunity to increase the original ten books to twelve by dividing the seventh book into the present seventh and eighth books, and the tenth into the present eleventh and twelfth."

  • "John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, is one of England's greatest works of literature. The piece describes the descent of man from the Garden of Eden, as told by the Christian story. The poem moves further than the story itself: in expressing the fall of man, Milton attempts to justify God's plan as well as resolve the conflict between God's foresight and man's free will. In poetic verse, Milton goes into profound exploration of the biblical characters, revealing the depth of Adam, Eve, Satan, and the Son of God. Having drawn out the biblical story, Milton sheds new light upon man's relationship with God."
  • "Paradise Lost is the great epic poem of the English language, a tale of immense drama and excitement, of rebellion and treachery, of innocence pitted against corruption, in which God and Satan fight a bitter battle for control of mankind's destiny. The struggle ranges across heaven, hell, and earth, as Satan and his band of rebel angels conspire against God. At the center of the conflict are Adam and Eve, motivated by all-too-human temptations, but whose ultimate downfall is unyielding love."
  • "Presents John Milton's epic poem about the fall of man and Satan's plot for revenge against God for casting him out of Heaven; and includes twelve illustrations from the first illustrated edition, published in 1688, and an introduction by novelist Philip Pullman."
  • "'Of man's first disobedience, and the fruit Of that forbidden tree, whose mortal taste Brought death into the world...Sing heavenly muse' From almost the moment of its first publication in 1667, Paradise Lost was considered a classic. It is difficult now to appreciate both how audacious an undertaking it represents, and how astonishing its immediate and continued success was. Over the course of twelve books Milton wrote an epic poem that would 'justify the ways of God to men', a mission that required a complex drama whose source is both historical and deeply personal. The struggle for ascendancy between God and Satan is played out across hell, heaven, and earth but the consequences of the Fall are all too humanly tragic - pride, ambition, and aspiration the motivating forces. In this new edition derived from their acclaimed Oxford Authors text, Stephen Orgel and Jonathan Goldberg discuss the complexity of Milton's poem in a new introduction, and on-page notes explain its language and allusions."
  • "John Leonard's revised edition of Paradise Lost contains full notes, which elucidate Milton's biblical, classical and historical allusions and discuss his vivid, highly original use of language and blank verse. --Penguin Books."@en
  • "Milton's great seventeenth-century epic draws upon Bible stories and classical mythology to explore the meaning of existence, as understood by people of the Western world. Its roots lie in the Genesis account of the world's creation and the first humans; its focus is a poetic interpretation "Of Man's first disobedience, and the fruit / Of that forbidden tree whose mortal taste / Brought death into the world, and all our woe / With loss of Eden."In sublime poetry of extraordinary beauty, Milton's poem references tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses, the Iliad and Odyssey, and Virgil's Aeneid. But one need not be a classical scholar to appreciate Paradise Lost. In addition to its imaginative use of language, the poem features a powerful and sympathetic portrait of Lucifer, the rebel angel who frequently outshines his moral superiors. With Milton's deft use of irony, the devil makes evil appear good, just as satanic practices may seem attractive at first glance.Paradise Lost has exercised enormous influence on generations of artists and their works, ranging from the Romantic poets William Blake and Percy Bysshe Shelley to Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation and J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings."@en

  • "Paradise Lost is one of the most epic, complex theological works to date. Milton's masterpiece in blank verse tells the story of the fall from grace. His protagonist is often read as Satan, who rebels against the omnipotent God, though he cannot win. Milton expresses the paradox of free will within the creation of an all-knowing God."

Its cosmic canvas--heaven, hell, chaos, and the Garden of Eden--has enthralled thousands of readers for more than three centuries. For others, however, it has remained an unopened treasure because of the perceived difficulty of its archaic vocabulary and poetic structure."

  • "Milton tells the story of Man's creation, fall and redemption - to 'justify the ways of God to men'. Milton produced characters which have become embedded in the consciousness of English literature - the frail, human pair, Adam and Eve; the terrible cohort of fallen angels; and Satan, tragic and heroic in his unremitting quet for revenge. The tale unfolds from the aftermath of the great battle between good and evil to the moving departure of Adam and Eve from Eden, with human and eternal anguish intertwined in magnificent resonance."@en

The poem also depicts the perspectives of both Adam and Eve, examining their personalities and motivations before and after Eve's fateful temptation. After publishing Paradise Lost, author John Milton was immediately recognized and lauded as one of the greatest English poets.
