William Robertson Rankin (b. 1842) was born in Anderson County, South Carolina. At the commencement of the Civil War he joined Hampton's Legion of South Carolina Volunteers and served until 1862. He fought in the first Battle of Bull Run, also known as Manassas, and the Peninsula Campaign. He also fought at the Battle of Antietam. He was then sent to eastern Tennessee to fight and later returned to northern Virginia where he continued to fight until Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomatox Court House.
