Towards an ethnography of voice in Amerafrican culture : an oral traditional register in four women's narratives

Drawing upon ethnopoetics, oral tradition theory, and contemporary literary and cultural theory, this dissertation explores the traditional style and aesthetics of the verbal arts of Africans in the American diaspora. The focus is verbal performance in several of its contexts, both written and oral-derived. I argue that the performance-based aesthetics of composition and reception mediate and enable the production of meaning in these expressive arts. Treating Amerafrican genealogical narratives and transcribed oral histories as examples of a high register, one that activates greater significative value, I develop a theoretical foundation that helps explain the power of verbal performance in both oral forms and textual ones.
