  • ""In my opinion, no two people can sing or play Mimi and Rodolfo better than Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti. The two are incomparable. They are simply the quintessential example of operatic excellence. Although, they are a bit older in this production, both in their mid 50s when they should be about 35 or so..., they are flawless in vocal quality and presence. Never has a soprano captured the essence or soul of Mimi as beautifully and gracefully as lyrico soprano Mirella Freni. It is truly her signature role, one that gained her fame notably at La Scalla in the early 60s. She then went on to film the 1963 Boheme and then made the unforgettable, unmatched 1973 recording of La Boheme with Pavarotti, again in my opinion the finest operatic recording of our time coming close to Price's Aida. Pavarotti, as always... is simply perfect. Vocally a stunner and romantically a hunk... he'll sweep any lady off her feet with his piercing vocal vibrancy and masterful control. The Musetta is as well quite charming and comical and Gino Quillico's rich Baritone is a must hear. His acting is as well one of the best interpretations of Marcello seen in quite a while. His artistry is right along in rank with Freni and Pavarotti. Do not miss out on this masterpiece. This is history, a pure piece of operatic excellence. And yes, i sobbed in the end... how could you not? If there is any one solid reason to watch this production however, i would have to say it is just to be able to hear the excellence of Mirella Freni, the finest soprano of the 20th century, with a voice that carries drama as well as innocence, the perfect blend for the perfect Mimi... Her 1st and 3rd act arias are truly the highlight of the film along with Pavarotti's 1st act aria. It reminds one what opera is all about.... passion and beautiful singing." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0254192/usercomments."
  • "Puccini's romantic tale of love and tragedy among a group of starving Parisian bohemians is updated to a 1950's setting in this adaptation."
  • ""In an attic apartment in the Latin Quarter of Paris, a group of young artists are living together in poverty. Their neighbour, the little seamstress Mimi, introduces herself, seeking a light for her candle, when Rodolfo is left alone. They fall in love. At the Café Momus Rodolfo presents Mimi to his friends, while the singer Musetta abandons her elderly rich lover Alcindoro in order to join Marcello. Alcindoro is left to settle the bill for all of them. Time has passed. Mimi has lived with Rodolfo, but they quarrel, because of his apparent jealousy. He has planned to leave her, as we learn in a scene set on a cold winter morning by the city gates. Musetta, a contrast in character to the gentle Mimi, later returns to the attic apartment of the four young men, bringing with her the dying Mimi, whom they now try to comfort, but in vain, as she dies before their eyes of the consumption that has racked her."--Www.naxos.com (as viewed on Apr. 18, 2007)."

The opera is followed by a special program showing behind the scenes preparation for the production."
  • "Franco Zeffirelli's sensational production of Puccini's haunting opera of young love is one of the great classics in the history of the Met. Many great singers have appeared in it over the years, but there is something especially endearing about this magical first cast: the touching and fragile Teresa Stratas as the dying Mimi, and young, handsome Jose Carreras as her passionate lover, Rodolfo. A flamboyant Renata Scotto is the irrepressible Musetta. James Levine conducts with his special combination of sensitivity and verve."
  • "Récit des aventures pittoresques du musicien Schaunard, du peintre Marcel, du philosophe Colline, du poète Rodolphe qui devient amoureux de sa voisine, Mimi. • "Puccini's heartbreaking story of young love in the garrets of Belle Epoque Paris has attracted many famous singers through the years. But with James Levine at the helm and the starry duo of Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto as Rodolfo and Mimě, every bit of emotion in the score pours across the footlights and seduces the audience. In this case, the audience was in the millions since this was the very first in the "Live from the Met" series of telecasts. The evocative production is by Fabrizio Melano, designed by Pier Luigi Pizzi."

This latest incarnation of Puccinis best-loved work stars Teodor Ilincai and Hibla Gerzmava and is conducted by Andris Nelsons with stage direction from John Copley. La Bohème is one of the most famously melodious and eternally popular of all operas. The carefree attitude of youth and the harsh realities of life are poignantly contrasted through the tender affair of Mimì and Rodolfo, from the heights of their first meeting through to its tragic end. One of the Royal Opera's most loved productions, brings to life Paris of 1830 in detailed sets and costumes as we travel with the characters between bare attic, crowded café and a wintery street right on the city's edge. La Bohème promises engrossing imagery and stirring drama."@en
