Typee : a peep at Polynesian life, during a four months' residence in a valley of the Marquesas ; the rev. ed., with a sequel
"A novel based on Melville's experiences in the Marquesas Islands. It includes an account of his captivity among the cannibalistic Typees" --Provided by publisher.
"Verslag door de Amerikaanse schrijver (1819-1891) van een verblijf bij de Typees op het eiland Nuku Hiva in de Stille Zuidzee."
"A ROMANCE OF THE SOUTH SEAS RECORDING THE ADVENTURES OF A WHALING VOYAGE IN THE PACIFIC. "TYPEE" (TAIPE) IS A VALLEY IN ONE OF THE MARQUESAS WHERE MELVILLE WAS KEPT CAPTIVE BY THE NATIVES. THIS BOOK GIVES A VIVID PICTURE OF A CIVILIZED MAN IN CONTACT WITH THE EXOTIC DREAM-LIKE LIFE OF THE TROPICS."
"Herman Melville's first book, partly based on his actual experiences as a captive on Nuku Hiva (which Melville spelled as Nukuheva) in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands."
"Melville's first novel was based on his experiences in French Polynesia. Tommo and Toby, tired of an abusive life on the whaling ship, decide to hide on an island. They soon discover the Typees, who bring them into their village with kindness, despite being cannibals. Contrasting the idyllic life of the natives with the corrupting influence of civilization, Typee gives early evidence of Melville's genius."
"Publisher's description: Almost from the time of its publication in 1846, Melville's first book, based on his own travels in the South Seas, has been recognized as a classic in the literature of travel and adventure. Although initially rejected as too fantastic to be true, Typee was immensely popular and regarded in Melville's lifetime as his best work. It established his reputation as the literary discoverer of the South Seas and inspired the likes of Jack London and Robert Louis Stevenson. Two common sailors jump ship and are held in benign captivity by Polynesian natives. Through the narrator's eyes we see a literate (if romanticized) portrait of the people and their culture presented in vivid, even scientific, detail. Melville's racy style and irreverence toward Christian missionaries caused a scandal, and critics denounced the narrator's suggestion that the native life might be superior to that of modern civilization. An adventure story above all, albeit one with a philosophical bent, Typee is a combination of elements that even early in Melville's career hinted at the towering ambition he would fulfill with Moby-Dick."

"The first volume of Melville's complete works includes three romances of the South Seas: Typee and Omoo, his exuberant accounts of the idyllic life in Polynesian island cultures, which remained his most popular works well into the 20th century, and Mardi, a combination love story, adventure, and political allegory set on a mythical Pacific island. These tales, written when Melville was in his late twenties, mark his beginnings as a writer and give early evidence of his genius and daring."
"A comic book adaptation of Melville's novel, followed by an essay."@en
"."
"Roman over het paradijselijke Polynesië."
"A romance of the South Seas. Some of the evnts resemble some in Melville's own life in the early 1840's."
"This novel, the last one that Melville wrote, is set on a Mississippi steamer on April Fool's Day. A Young man, the devil in disguise, enters the steamer and during its voyage down the mighty river he starts confronting the passengers with their deepest fears and prejudices."
"[The author was more than two years in the South Seas, after escaping from the valley, as recounted in the last chapter. Some time after returning home the foregoing narrative was published, though it was little thought at the time that this would be he means of revealing the existence of Toby, who had long been given up for lost. But so it proved. The story of his escape supplies a natural sequel to the adventure, and as such it is now added to the volume. It was related to the author by Toby himself, not ten days since] New York, July 1846. (Note page)"
"The young hero jumps ship with a mate and spends four months with the islanders known as Typee - the 'eaters of men.'"

""Taïpi et Omou retracent le récit des pérégrinations d'Herman Melville en Polynésie. C'est à la fois une relation d'aventures et une oeuvre d'anthropologue. Melville décide, au cours de la rédaction de la suite de son voyage dans le Pacifique, d'échapper au récit autobiographique et de laisser libre cours à son imagination pour s'aventurer, avec Mardi, dans le roman."
