Intruder in the dust : a novel

As Lucas Beauchamp sits in jail after being accused of shooting a white man in cold blood, he asks his uncle, a lawyer, for help. The case hinges upon the type of bullet killed the man'and Lucas swears if they dig up the body, it won't be one that came from his gun. When his uncle refuses to help him, two teenagers, along with a wily septuagenarian, take justice into their own hands. In Intruder in the Dust, (his fourteenth novel,) author William Faulkner explores themes of social justice in the racially charged south, as the truth surrounding the murder case finally comes to light. The character of Lucas Beauchamp was first introduced in the short story, "The Fire and the Heart," included both here and in the collection, Go Down, Moses. Intruder in the Dust was made into a feature film in 1949, and was shot in Faulkner's home town of Oxford, Mississippi. • "Lucas Beauchamp, a black man wrongly arrested for the murder of Vinson Gowrie, a white man, sets out to prove his innocence, aided by a white lawyer Gavin Stevens and his young nephew Chick Mallison."
  • "At once an engrossing murder mystery and an unflinching portrait of racial injustice in the Reconstruction South, Intruder in the Dust stands out as a true classic of Southern literature. A classic Faulkner novel which explores the lives of a family of characters in the South. An aging black who has long refused to adopt the black's traditionally servile attitude is wrongfully accused of murdering a white man."

  • "Charles, a sixteen-year-old white boy, repays a debt he owes to an elderly black man, Lucas. After Lucas is accused of murdering a white man, Charles proves his innocence and saves him from a lynching in a southern town."@en
  • "Als een zwarte man valselijk beschuldigd wordt van moord roept hij de hulp in van een blanke advocaat om zijn onschuld te bewijzen."
  • ""Set in the deep south that provided the backdrop for all of Faulkner's finest fiction, Intruder in the Dust is the novel that marks the final phase of its author's outstanding creative period. The chronicle of an elderly black farmer arrested for the murder of a white man and under threat from the lynch mob is a characteristically Faulknerian tale of dark omen, its sole ray of hope the character of the young white boy who repays an old favour by proving the innocence of the man who saved him from drowning in an icy creek." --Contratapa."

  • "This novel tells the story of murder and the mass mind; of an accused negro whose guilt or innocence becomes secondary to the larger moral problems of justice itself, of a white boy just old enough to be torn between a sense of kinship with his community and an urgent impulse to side with the scapegoat. In the few fateful hours while the township is suspended between instinctive decency and irrevocable action, the boy, with another lad and an old woman, searches for the truth that may free not only the accused but the community itself."@en
  • ""When Lucas, an elderly ... [African American], is accused of murdering a white man, Charles, a 16-year-old white boy, works to save him from being lynched. charles gets the help he needs in his sleuthing from an old aristocratic lady and a young black boy. The trio visits the church graveyard at night to dig up the corpse of the supposed victim. The book can be read as a mystery and, on a deeper level, as a social commentary on the South.""
