Demography of an Athabascan village : Minto, Alaska

"This microdemographic study of Minto, Alaska involved a household survey, collection of reproductive histories and genealogies, and compiling a residential location listing. The history of the population revealed a three-phase temporal progression from a mobile hunting and gathering band to a village settlement based on fishing the Tanana River salmon and, recently, a planned community relocation. Each phase has distinct demographic characteristics. Village population size was determined to be a logarithmic function of the length of settlement. A high sex ratio of the band population reflects differential female mortality while a high sex ratio of the recently relocated village population reflects the differential migration of reproductive-age females. Reproductive histories revealed a high infant mortality and differential fertility. Genealogical data demonstrated a high inbreeding index. The discovery of autosomal recessive deafness in the progeny of two cross-cousin marriages demonstrated the reduced fitness due to homozygosity in small population isolates"--Leaf iii.
