When a feller needs a friend

"Clare A. Briggs, the creator of the cartoon series, "'When a Feller Needs a Friend," has done more, perhaps, than any other individual to bring home to the people the necessity of a sympathetic understanding of the boy and his problems. With his pen he has shown these many problems, and continues to show them, with pointed humor that drives home the lesson; for these problems though of little consequence to the adult, are of great consequence to the boy. To him, they are tragedies--all through a lack of sympathetic understanding of his elders. Their childhood and the viewpoint of the child are far behind them. For years, Mr. Briggs has tried to instill in the heart of the public the need of this understanding. He has succeeded to the extent that "'When a Feller Needs a Friend," has become a sympathetic catch phrase throughout the country. His work inspired Mrs. Harriet L. McCollum, the psychologist, to carry his idea into the realm of child training, to promote through an understanding of the child's Psychology, a broad sympathy with little boys and girls, and the interpretations they put upon their problems, and also, with the object of showing their elders how they may prevent the tragic element entering into them and reflecting so harshly upon the child"--Book.
