Losing battles

The various members of Granny Vaughan's copious family gather at the farm in Banner, Mississippi, to celebrate the nimble old lady's ninetieth birthday. they are all talkers: as the conversations wind and repeat, each time with almost imperceptible variations, characters emerge - often amusingly. The dedicated school-teacher who fought the 'losing battle' against ignorance and illiteracy never appears but is there more vividly than anyone else in their thoughts.
