Between the lions : a history of the Van Raalte mill in Saratoga Springs, New York

For eighty years, the textile mill on High Rock Avenue was part of the industrial history of Saratoga Springs, New York. The city, a famous Victorian spa resort, relied almost entirely on tourists to support its economy until the close of the nineteenth century. A sharp decline in tourism and increase in unemployment sparked industrialization at the turn of the century. In 1906 Joseph Clark built his silk glove mill as one of the first major manufacturing operations in Saratoga Springs.

The city, a famous Victorian spa resort, relied almost entirely on tourists to support its economy until the close of the nineteenth century. A sharp decline in tourism and increase in unemployment sparked industrialization at the turn of the century. In 1906 Joseph Clark built his silk glove mill as one of the first major manufacturing operations in Saratoga Springs."@en
  • "In 1919, the Van Raalte brothers purchased the mill as part of their growing silk knitting operation. By the 1920s, the Van Raalte Company was on the Stock Exchange and the Saratoga Springs Mill was just one of a dozen company mills manufacturing gloves, veiling, hosiery, and underthings. In the 1950s, the company was at its peak directing the operation of mills in seven states and territories from its New York City office and Van Raalte's high-quality products were sold around the world."@en
  • "The Saratoga Springs mill also reached its peak during this time, employing nearly 800 people. By that time the mill was a vertical operation. Nylon thread, the dominant new fiber in the underwear industry, came into the mill at one end and exited at the other end as a finished garment, boxed and ready for shipping to retailers. Former employers of the mill remembered their time working at the mill with its poor working conditions, low pay, and strong employee camaraderie."@en
  • "By the 1970s difficult economic times struck the company and Cluett, Peabody & Co., Inc., owners of Van Raalte at that time, closed the mill in Saratoga Springs. Former employees of the mill purchased the building and operated it as a knitting mill under the name Saratoga Knitting Company until 1986 when it closed for good. Former employees saw both closings as cases of poor company management by insensitive corporate heads."@en
  • "The mill itself sat empty and deteriorating after its closing until 1999 when developers Roohan and Bonacio resurrected the crumbling building. By 2004, after extensive renovations, it had once again become a productive part of the Saratoga Springs's industrial sector as a high-tech incubator park and retail site."@en
