"Beatty's project to make a film based on the life of John Reed gestated for more than a decade. Reed was a politically committed journalist and activist living on the margins of respectable society whose involvement in radical American politics took him to Russia in 1917. Beatty saw parallels between radical politics in the sixties and Reed's life and times. Inevitably Beatty elevated romance, notably Reed's relationship with Louise Bryant, above politics. Nevertheless, his decision to use more than 30 'witnesses' as a kind of chorus to complement the drama was both daring and innovative for a big budget Hollywood production, as is his montage approach to the drama in the first half of the film. The witnesses bring multiple and contending perspectives in describing social spectacle and making comments on the historical personalities represented in the biopic."@en
