An American Air Force major on leave in Japan after the Korean War falls in love with a Japanese actress. When they declare their love openly, they find themselves scorned equally by both the Japanese and Americans.

"A US Air Force ace is transferred to Kobe, Japan, in 1951 during the Korean War. There he meets his American girlfriend Eileen Webster (Patricia Owens) and a Japanese dancer whom he falls in love with. American military regulations at the time discourage personnel in Japan to marry Japanese nationals. Major Lloyd Gruver (Marlon Brando) and airman Joe Kelly (Red Buttons) find their love with Hana-ogi (Miiko Taka) and Katsumi (Miyoshi Umeki) at odds with the establishment. Tanabata (the seventh night), the festival celebrated in the movie, originated in China and depicts the love between a cowherd and a weaver. It is on the seventh day of the seventh moon of the lunar calendar, around mid-August."
