Tilliera (1801-1844), provinciálního publicisty, autora pamfletů, brožur a polemik, byla dlouho podceňována buržoasní lit. hitorií a ponechávána tak v zapomenutí. A přece je to dílo klasické již postavou svého hrdiny - bodrého a spravedlivého plebejce, jenž pohrdá králem a šlechtou a cítí se, byť chud, přece jen svým pánem, poněvadž poctivě pracuje a dělá si dobrý den z mocných a nafoukaných. Je to člověk, který kašle na autoritu - důstojnost a sebevědomí poctivého člověka je mu nade vše. Neobstojí před ním výsady ani náboženské pověry a sám se humorně tituluje "mluvčím lidu", jsa hrdý na to, ze z lidu vskutku jest a že má v lásce jen to, co je přirozené, prosté a pravdivé. "Humoristickosatirický román francouzského romanopisce a demokratického pamfletisty (1801-1844), jedno z nejlepších humoristických děl 19. století. Hlavní postavou je zde veselý a duchaplný lékař, který miluje víno, "ale nikoli pro víno, nýbrž kvůli onomu několikahodinovému bláhovství, které víno skýtá", nemocným dává ve smíchu naději a vtipem bojuje proti omezenosti, proti mocným a nafoukaným."
