The Cīvakacintāmaṇi in historical perspective

This dissertation discusses the history of the Jainas in Tamil Nadu, the class alliance which was their support and the literary ramifications of this alliance as seen in the C(')ivakacintamani (ca. 9th century) written by Tiruttakkatevar. Particular attention is directed at Tiruttakkatevar's use of sexually explicit imagery for the cause of Jaina asceticism. As part of the analysis of the C(')ivakacintamani's literary roots, the extent of Sanskrit vocabulary and Kavya imagery in the work are discussed. Includes translation of the first five hundred verses of the text.
