The Saragossa manuscript: a collection of weird tales
"Alphonse, a young Walloon officer, is travelling to join his regiment in Madrid in 1739. But he soon finds himself mysteriously detained at a highway inn in the strange and varied company of thieves, brigands, cabbalists, noblemen, coquettes and gypsies, whose stories he records over sixty-six days. The resulting manuscript is discovered some forty years later in a sealed casket, from which tales of characters transformed through disguise, magic and illusion, of honour and cowardice, of hauntings and seductions, leap forth to create a vibrant polyphony of human voices. Jan Potocki (1761-1812) used a range of literary styles--Gothic, picaresque, adventure, pastoral, erotic--in his novel of stories-within-stories, which, like the Decameron and Tales from the Thousand and One Nights, provides entertainment on an epic scale."--Book cover.

"In 18th century Spain, a young officer falls in with a band of wanderers, among them a gypsy chief, a brigand and even the Wandering Jew himself. The officer hears over a hundred tales of adventure, honor, cowardice, philosophy and satanism. By a Polish ethnographer (1761-1815) who wrote in French."
"The papers consist of a printed French version of Potocki's novel "The Saragossa manuscript; a collection of weird tales." The work is divided into various parts. Part one (158 pages) was originally published in St. Petersburg in 1804 and 1805. Part two (represented here only by 48 pages) was published in Paris in 1813, and additional episodes appeared in 1815."
"One of the great masterpieces of literary fantasy and a joy to read."@en

""Jan Potocki (1761-1812) wrote these dream-like chronicles of a young man who is lost in the wilderness of the Sierra Morena and meets a range of characters who each relate their own bizarre, often grotesque and sometimes picaresque tales to weave an intricate tapestry of stories-within-stories. He finds himself in the center of a plot to restore the heir of an ancient clan founded during the Reconquista"--Stumbleupon."
