Mary and Josephine LaPointe were born in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. Their parents were Barthelmi LaPointe and Julia Vinnette dit LaRont. Their grandparents were Frances LaPointe and Marie Antaya dit Pellitier and Jacque Vinnette dit LaRont and Margurite Suave, an Indian woman. Mary LaPointe married Peter LaTranch, a member of the Pembina band of Ojibway Indians. The couple had seven children born between 1857 and 1870.
