"The inspiration for the character of Tom Bolton in this novel was Harriet Beecher Stowe's son, Frederick. Frederick fought for the Union in the Civil War and had problems with alcohol for many years. Once home from the war, he became a severe alcoholic. In 1870, he traveled to California, disappeared shortly thereafter and was presumed dead. Beecher Stowe's portrayal in this book, published two years later, of alcoholism as a disease and not as a moral or social failing is unusual for its time. Also notable for its time, the novel makes a case for a woman's right to a career."@en
