Brigadier and Brevet Major-General John Frederick Hartranft (1830-1889) was born in New Hanover Township, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, the only child of Samuel Engle Hartranft and Mary Lydia Bucher. He was the sixth generation descendant of Tobias Hartranft from Selesia, who fled Germany in 1734, arriving in Philadelphia. He married Sallie Douglas Sebring, daughter of William Sebring of Easton, Pennsylvania. They had six children born between 1855 and 1867. Bucher family emigrant, Johann Dietrich Bucher (1709-1769), was born in Switzerland. He immigrated to Philadelphia in 1732.
