The physical fitness of combat Marines in Viet Nam was evaluated by use of standard tests. The combat Marines in general scored lower than did graduates of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island. The evacuation test appears to possess low reliability. The validity of timed leg raises and sit-ups as a measure of trunk strength is questionable. The justification for including both push-ups and pull-ups in a single battery is questionable but requires additional study. The most valid test may be one of the troops' ability to cover a long distance under a heavy load. The decrement of performance resulting from combat operations suggests that Marines should be in superior physical condition before being sent overseas. Further research along these lines is indicated if the Corps is to have a scientifically based physical conditioning program. (Author).
